Dual Fuel

The cooperative offers a rebate and rate discount to members who install a plenum heater in their fossil fuel furnace, with or without an add-on heat pump. A plenum heater is electric resistance heat that fits into the plenum of an existing fossil-fuel furnace. If you use a plenum heater along with an add-on heat pump, you are able to capture the full efficiency of the heat pump. By using the heat pump longer to lower outdoor temperatures, members can continue to take advantage of the kilowatt-hour rate discount.

Rebate

The cooperative will issue to a member who installs a plenum heater in their fossil-fuel furnace a $300 rebate. However, if a member wishes, a WarmFlo® plenum heater will be supplied by the cooperative to the member at no cost (while supplies last in lieu of the $300 rebate).

Rate Discount

Members will have the electric resistance heat and/or heat pump use metered separately and receive a 2.56 cent per kWh discount that will be applied to their electric bill October through May. Members with an add-on heat pump will also receive a 1.5 cent per kWh discount in the summer months of June through September. A $2 monthly fee will be added to the monthly electric bill to cover the cost of the sub-meter. This sub-meter will automatically read the meter and then send the reading to the cooperative each month.

Time and Temperature Schedule

The plenum heater in a dual fuel system switches to fossil fuel under the following Time and Temperature Schedule.

November, December, March & April
<10° at 6 a.m.: 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.
<30° at 5 p.m.: 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

January & February
<10° at 6 a.m.: 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.
<25° at 5 p.m.: 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Additional Program Qualifications

The member must also install an electric water heater, equipped with a load control switch. Please call the cooperative for water heater program details or visit the water heater website page.

Load Management Control

Members must participate in the cooperative's Cool Returns air conditioning load control program. Members will receive a one-time $100 credit off their electric bill for the installation of the summer air conditioning load control switch. Then beginning two years after installation, the member will receive a $6 credit off their electric bill for the months of June, July, August and September. The switch, when activated, will automatically cycle the compressor off for 8 to 12 minutes out of every 30 minutes during summer peak demand times on extremely hot days. The switch is programmed so the compressor will never be off more than 12 minutes continuously each half hour. During these cycles, the air handler continues to circulate air throughout the home.
